“Editorial” gets used loosely in photography. Here’s what it actually means and why it’s worth knowing before you book a birthday photographer for women in Austin, Texas.
Editorial vs. Standard Portrait Session
A standard portrait session documents how you look. An editorial photoshoot in Austin, Texas captures your story, the same way a magazine like Vogue or Harpers Bazaar does. The entire photoshoot is directed by a theme, mood, and narrative. the difference isn’t the camera or the location, it’s the thought and intention behind the images.
A standard session asks: where should we take pictures of you? An editorial birthday photoshoot asks: what is this birthday actually about for you, and what does that look like on camera?
What’s actually included in a session with me
- Wardrobe support and mood board direction. We shop your closet together to pull the perfect outs, and you get access to the chiffon and silk fabrics I have in the studio.
- Professional makeup. This is a game changer, even if you’ve nailed your makeup look. Getting it done by a professional is the kind of pampering every woman deserves on her birthday. Depending on the location of your session, your makeup will be complete by the artist before you head to the photoshoot location, for example if your location is outside. If you’re in my studio, everything happens here. For the 1hr you’re getting your makeup done, you can sit back, relax, play some games on your phone or watch your favorite tv show and completely let go of any responsibilities.
- Posing direction and photography. This is THE moment you step in front of the camera and become the star you are. I’ll guide you through poses based on your mood board, body type, outfit and lighting. This is where everything comes together.
- Photo gallery and prints. The finale when you get to shop your gallery and take home all of the beautiful images we created together. For every birthday session, I always recommend the trifold centerpiece (at the very least) because it’s simple, high quality and my favorite photo product 🙂
Why this all matters
Most women have been in front of the camera and felt like an object being documented, not a person being seen and revered. An editorial approach can’t help but see you. You’re not awkwardly holding still for a photo. You’re the subject of a story someone else is paying attention to on purpose, which is a genuinely different experience in your body, not just a different kind of photo.
That’s the actual product of an editorial birthday photoshoot at Austin, Texas.
